Project Work
In collaboration with a range of valued funders and community partners, CALA delivers a diverse range of projects designed to support children, families, and practitioners across the Highlands and beyond. These partnerships enable us to respond to local needs, promote inclusion, and create opportunities that strengthen communities. By working together, we can reach more families, enhance children’s experiences, and make a lasting positive impact on their lives.

In partnership with Inspiring Scotland, CALA delivers the Active Play Programme, designed to help children build confidence, improve physical wellbeing, and develop essential movement skills through fun, active play. Working closely with schools and communities, we create opportunities for children to be more active every day while supporting staff and parents to embed play and physical activity into daily routines.

Play for Learning
In partnership with NHS HighlandAbout Play for Learning
Working within Primary Schools, we help schools embed high-quality play opportunities throughout their environment, daily experiences, and pupil interactions. By creating more active, engaging, and inclusive play spaces, the programme underpinned by elements from ‘Active Play’ increases children’s physical activity levels, builds confidence in movement, and supports the development of healthy habits from an early age. This whole-school approach directly contributes to Scotland’s Child Healthy Weight outcomes by encouraging regular physical activity, reducing sedentary behaviour, and promoting positive relationships with movement and play.

Baby and Beyond
In partnership with NHS HighlandAbout Baby and Beyond
CALA’s peer support groups offer a welcoming and informed space for families in the early stages of their baby’s life. The groups provide practical support with breastfeeding, formula or combination feeding, and weaning, giving parents reassurance and guidance whatever their feeding choices. Alongside feeding, the groups cover key aspects of early baby development, including milestones, responsive caregiving, early communication, and play-based interactions. Elements of the PEEP (Peers Early Education Partnership) programme are woven throughout to help strengthen early attachment and bonding between parent and baby.

Bright Start is our mentoring programme and funded through the Building Brighter Futures Fund for 2024/25 and 2025/26. The programme supports young people interested in childcare by addressing common misconceptions, helping them understand qualification routes, and guiding them through barriers such as low confidence, rurality, or limited opportunities. Through personalised mentoring and development planning, Bright Start helps participants build a clear and achievable pathway into the sector. We work with local schools and partner agencies to reach senior pupils and young people considering a career in childcare.
